The Watt Residence is in Statesville, NC. This
two-story 4000 square foot timber frame home has
an additional 200 square foot observation area
at the top of its stair tower from which to
survey the home’s surrounding countryside. The
tower also provides the main point of entry into
the home and accommodates vertical circulation
between the house’s two floors and the
observation deck. The floor plan is open and
free-flowing, with minimal separations between
the different functions of the home being
largely determined by the rhythm of alternating
bents and bays within the home’s full custom
timber frame.
The Watt residence is a prime example of how we
work with our clients to achieve the highest
possible standards of energy efficiency and
sustainable design that are possible under any
given set of circumstances surrounding a
specific custom home design. The full timber
frame is to be constructed of materials
harvested and milled entirely within the state
of North Carolina. The house was also designed
to be a passive solar home with a solar water
and radiant heating system. Supplementary
heating is to be provided by an efficiently
designed forced air back-up system as well as
two soapstone wood burning stoves. Despite the
green innovations that have been designed into
this home, we’ve sacrificed nothing in the way
of aesthetics, working in concert with the
home’s HVAC designers to conceal all the systems
that will make the house work so well while
leaving the natural beauty of the timber frame
on display for all the world to see.
We’re thrilled that our work and collaboration
on this project has yielded a beautiful, bright,
airy, comfortable, energy efficient home that
the Watts can take pleasure in for years to come
before passing it on to the next generation.
